Everyone loves a good resurrection story. The hero seemingly gets defeated, goes underground for a few years, and returns triumphantly and stronger than ever. Or maybe this is an origin story? A reflection on the hero’s roots and what made them who they are today. This story might be a bit of both. While there is no real defeat here, the hero in this story did disappear from the public eye for a while, before returning with a new, back to his roots, venture.

Scott Wise learned some lessons with his chain of Scotty’s Brewhouse and Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. restaurants. Wise, whose primary job now is first vice president of commercial real estate brokerage CBRE, launched Roots Burger Bar in Muncie two years ago as what he called his “side hustle.” Wise, who lives on the north side of Indianapolis, plans to open his second Roots Burger Bar in Carmel in the Brookshire Village Shoppes at 12552 Gray Rd., in late 2021 or early 2022. Wise said he has a lot of respect for the center’s developer, KennMar, and its president/CEO, Brent Benge.

Roots held its soft opening on Thursday in the same place that Wise, a graduate of Yorktown High School and Ball State University, founded Scotty's Brewhouse in 1996. Even in the first two days of opening to little fanfare, the restaurant drew steady crowds for both lunch and dinner.

Roots Burger Bar opened June 26, 2019, at the location of what was once the original location of Scotty's Brewhouse. Founder Scott Wise said he decided to open the restaurant in the middle summer to get it prepared for the regular school semester in the fall.

Wise tells IBJ Podcast host Mason King that he's both emotional and excited about the new start, which he says has been like hitting control-alt-delete on his career.

After selling his Scotty’s Brewhouse chain and dealing with a flurry of lawsuits after that business later filed for bankruptcy, Scott Wise is ready to get back to basics.
